Welcome to the Intensive English Program (IEP) at Marywood University. I hope that viewing this website will allow you to realize the many benefits of studying here. International students at Marywood often talk about the beauty of campus and the fact that they feel safe here. They also note that people here are warm, friendly, and welcoming.
The IEP faculty is very knowledgable, experiences, caring, and diverse. The English as a Second Language classes are small, and the courses are interesting and challenging. In addition to your teachers, there are many other caring people here to help you should you have any problems or needs. Individuals in the Registrar's Office and the Office of Diversity Efforts are among those available to assist you.
I grew up in a family where English and Italian were spoken, and I studied French in high school and college. After receiving my bachelor's degree in English /Secondary Education from Marywood, I earned my master's degree from the Bread Loaf School of English of Middlebury College, Vermont.
I taught English at the high school level for over 13 years. In 1997, I began teaching international students in the IEP at Marywood. From 1998 through 2004, I also taught international students ESL in both the IEP and ESL Connections program at another college. In addition, I was an ESL tutor for elementary and middle school students in a public school district in 1998 and 1999. In 2005, I became the IEP Coordinator at Marywood, and I continue to teach in the program. I truly look forward to going to work every day.
Marywood has had students from all over the world. I am constantly impressed by the camaraderie and good will found among the students in the classes and also between the students and teachers. Students have said that they feel comfortable here and that many friendships have been made as a result of studying at Marywood. On behalf of the entire IEP team at Marywood, I cordially invite you to study with us.
I moved to Northeastern Pennsylvania in 2000 and started work in Marywood University's library. My job at the library includes teaching information literary skills and providing reference service. I also teach a freshman seminar course. I enjoy working as a librarian and instructor at Marywood.
I received my bachelor's degree in English and a Graduate Certification in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESOL) in China. I received my master's degree in Sociology from the University of Arkansas and a second master's degree in Library and Information Sciences from the State University of New York at Albany.
I taught ESL at Nankai University in China for 10 years before embarking on the adventurous journey to the U.S. Coming from a different cultural background, I have obtained a unique experience as an international student and an ESL teacher. Studying English is both challenging and enjoyable!
I am pleased to be a part of Marywood's IEP after more than thirty years of teaching experience in public school districts. My love of languages began early as I grew up in a Czech family and was enrolled in a Slovak school at age six. After studying French and Latin in high school, I pursued a bachelor's degree in Spanish and Latin at College Misericordia. My graduate work included a master's degree in educational administration from the University of Scranton, a second master's degree from Villanova, and postgraduate studies at Drexel University.
Before coming to Marywood, I was Foreign Language and ESL coordinator for the Abington Heights School District. Through teaching, traveling, and participating in foreign exchange programs, I have made international friendships which I cherish. As a result of my personal experiences, I know that learning a new language and becoming comfortable in a foreign culture can be challenging. Marywood's serene campus, caring faculty, and small class sizes provide great opportunities for meeting the challenge.
