Language 101 and Language 102
Designed for students at Marywood who do not speak English as their primary language. The courses are designed to develop language skills, including vocabulary, reading, writing, library usage, and research skills. The courses also prepare students for oral and written communication skills needed in an academic environment.
Listening
Addresses all aspects of listening from sound discrimination to taking notes on a college classroom.
Speaking
Encourages students to communicate ideas in English in informal discussion groups, role plays, and problem solving situations. Pronunciation, inflection, and intonation are addressed. Students also practice speaking in front of the class.
Reading
Emphasizes vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and reading skills. Students learn reading strategies to help them increase their reading speed and reduce their dependency on dictionaries.
Writing
Designed to guide students in expressing their ideas in clear, coherent, and concise English. Students perform guided writing activities at the sentence, paragraph, and research paper levels.
English in the American Media
Students explore films, television, and other media formats as sources for learning English and American culture. The course instructor guides students throughout the course.
Reading/Writing Workshop
Students create elements of the English language such as menus, directions, television program highlights, short stories, and soap operas. This course is appropriate for all levels of English proficiency.
American Culture
Students examine cross-cultural situations, United States popular culture, and American traditions.
